I really like rainbow things. This has entailed baking an increasing amount of rainbow things. Here’s a brief blog, pt1, about rainbow heart cookies. pt2 is about challah, and pt3 about asian chiffon cake.

1) Rainbow Heart Cookies

The ideal
Ours didn’t turn out as pretty, but then again we didn’t use a ruler.

Ingredients: Cookie dough, gel food coloring, sprinkles
Knead batter until homogenized
divide: 1/3 white, then of the 2/3 remaining, divide into six parts
knead colors into dough
roll into balls and put in fridge so they are stiff enough to work with
Roll out flat (we used a cylindrical thing and two piles of paper)
make a heart cookie cutter out of a coke can
all the colors together and now back into the fridge
egg wash, our adhesive of choice
stick the layers together with egg wash, then trim all sides until we get a rectangle
fridge again!
slice into chunks the thickness of the cookie cutter
cut out hearts!
so many hearts, and so much leftover scrap too
line all the hearts up
stretch the white dough into long lines, wrap around hearts, roll smooth
cut into cookies
forgot the sprinkles!
cut into cookies again
then bake
final cookie! missing a few colors, so it goes
